Bassi says Delhi police will protect free speech if you protest at Jantar Mantar

Breaking his silence on the brutalities against protesting students, the Delhi police commissioner BS Bassi on Monday said that the students ought to have protested at Jantar Mantar.

Bassi tweeted, “DP is bound to protect freedom of free speech & peaceful assembly. Help DP & democracy by agitating at JantarMantar.(sic)”

Earlier today, the Delhi Commission for Women took suo-moto cognisance of the viral video of Delhi Police’s ‘male personnel’s brutally beating women protesters’ who were protesting in Delhi’s Jhandewalan area on Monday.

In its notice addressed to Joint DCP, Kumar Gautam, the DCW chief Swati Maliwal said, “It is observed in the video that no female police personnel are present at the time of the incident and the male police personnel are beating protestors and seem to be ‘supporting’ the men in civil clothes who are also beating up female protestors. A copy of the video is enclosed for your perusal.”

Maliwal added that the video was extremely disturbing demanded to know the information including the detailed status report on the incident, names and designation of the officers who approved the police action against the protestors and reasons for non-availability of female police personnel.

She also asked for the copies of all ‘guidelines/ standing orders of Delhi Police to deal with female protestors.’

Maliwal said that the information sought must be provided within 72 hours to the Commission ‘failing which appropriate action will be initiated under law.’

Delhi police too issued a statement on twitter saying it had sought report from DCP Gautam on Monday’s brutalities against the protesting students.

It said, “Spl CP (Law & Order) has asked the Jt CP Central Range S.K Gautam to look into the incident & submit a report. (sic)”
