BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has objected to the Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi’s suggestion that the government should issue security clearance to Sun TV-owned 33 TV channels.
Swamy tweeted, ” Shocking that after Home Minister declines security clearance to Sun TV the AG gives a contrary opinion to I&B !!! Time for me to go to SC.” (sic)
In his opinion, sought by the ministry of information and broadcasting, Rohatgi said that the government should grant security clearance to the broadcasters.
Sun TV requires fresh security clearance every 10 years. The government had refused to give them security clearance on the grounds that there were pending criminal investigations against its promoters including the chairman, Kalanithi Maran and his brother, former Union Minister, Dayanidhi Maran.
AG’s advice is not binding on the government, but it usually tends to accept the recommendations.
