Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday launched a tirade against Assam’s BJP government after cops and a ‘journalist’ were caught on camera committing gross human rights violations.
Gandhi tweeted, “Assam is on state-sponsored fire. I stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the state- no children of India deserve this.”
In the viral video, shared by AIDUF MLA Ashraful Hussain, armed members of the Assam Police were seen launching a brutal attack against civilians during an eviction drive by the cops. What shocked netizens was the involvement of a cameraman, who was seen violently jumping on the face of a man, who had become motionless following a brutal attack by the cops.
At least three people are reported to have been killed by the Assam Police and many more injured. The incident took place in the Dholpur area of the Darrang district of Assam. Darrang SP Sushanta Biswa Sarma told NDTV that nine policemen too had sustained injuries. He, however, denied knowledge of the brutal attack by his cops and a journalist against a motionless man.
He said, “The area is big. I was on another side. I will find out and assess the situation.”
Curiously, SP Darrang is the brother of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Director General of Assam Police later tweeted informing that the cameraman, who was seen jumping on the face of the unconscious man, had been taken into custody by the Assam CID. He was identified as Bijoy Bonia. The DGP’s tweet read, “Currently in Sipajhar, taking stock of the ground situation. The cameraman who was seen attacking an injured man in a viral video has been arrested. As per wish of Hon. CM @himantabiswa I have asked CID to investigate the matter. Cameraman Bijoy Bonia is in @AssamCid’s custody.”
