60 Indian soldiers killed J&K in 2016, twice the combined death toll of last 2 years

The Indian army has lost 60 soldiers due to considerable increase in infiltration on the LoC and counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir. The number of Indian soldiers killed is nearly twice compared to the combined annual toll in 2015 and 2014.

Quoting army sources, a report in Indian Express said that 60 soldiers were killed in J&K till 15 December this year. The number of Indian soldiers killed in the previous year was 33 while the toll stood at 32 in 2014.

Jammu: Army jawan carry the mortal remains of Havildar Ravi Paul at his native village, Sarwa in Samba on Monday. Ravi Paul was martyred in terrorist attack at the Army Camp at Uri near LoC.

23 of those killed in 2016 were in operations at the LoC — ceasefire violations, counter-infiltration and Pakistan Army’s Border Action Team (BAT) operations.

Only four soldiers had died on the LoC in 2015, and five in 2014.

19 Indian soldiers had died in Uri terror attack this year. The Indian army had launched ‘surgical strikes’ on several terror launch pads across the LoC.

Pakistan’s aggression at the LoC had formed a key part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election campaign in 2014.

In one of his famous TV interviews, Modi had vowed to teach Pakistan a lesson by responding to the neighbouring country in their ‘own language.’
