25 people killed after bus plunges into Cauvery canal in Karnataka’s Mandya district


In a tragic incident, at least 25 passengers were reported to have died in Karnataka’s Mandya district after a private bus fell into a Cauvery canal on Saturday.

The bus was on its way to Madnya from Pandavapur. The accident took place at VC canal of the Cauvery river in Kanaganamaradi village. A report by news agency ANI said that the death toll was likely to rise further.

According to eyewitnesses, the bus fell into the canal at around 1 pm on Saturday afternoon. The boy, who jumped out of the bus has survived. “There is no clarity on the number of deaths as all those who were inside the bus have died. Only the surviving boy can give us more details. But he is now in the state of shock,” Times of India quoted a police officer.

The visuals from the accident site showed locals using long ropes to carry out the rescue operation. According to officials, many passengers could not escape because the bus fell into the canal on its side.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy is believed to be in Mandya and may visit the accident site soon.
