17 months after Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation, Centre finally notifies appointments of Mohammed Nias CP as Kerala High Court judge

17 months after the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendations, the Centre’s Narendra Modi government has finally notified the appointments of Mohammed Nias CP as a judge of the Kerala High Court.

According to the notification from the Department of Justice in the Law Ministry, Viju Abraham too has been appointed as an additional judge along with Mohammed Nias Chovvakkaran Puthiyapurayil.

Their appointments would be for a period of two years with affect from the date they take charge as judges.

According to news agency PTI, additional judges are usually appointed for a period of two years before being elevated as permanent judges.

A report by the Livelaw website, the Kerala High Court recommended the names of Mohammed Nias, Paul KK and CS Dias on 12 April, 2018. The Supreme Court Collegium gave its approval in March 2019, but the Centre’s Narendra Modi government only notified the appointment of CS Dias in November 2019.

In March this year, the Supreme Court Collegium once again reiterated its recommendation for Mohammed Nias, Viju Abraham, Mohammed Nias and Paul KK.
