Was IAS Shruti Sharma Byju’s Student: Fact Check of Viral Claim

IAS topper Shruti Sharma has become a new sensation on social media after the JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia alumnus secured the All India Ranking 1 in the UPSC exams on Monday. Shruti, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district, was preparing for her civil services exams from Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia’s residential coaching programme. Jamia said that 23 of its students from the said programme have cracked the UPSC exam this year. Meanwhile, a poster of ed-tech company Byju’s staking its claim on Shruti’s success has gone viral.

Speaking about her UPSC success, Shruti said that she did not expect to secure All India number one ranking given that she had missed out on cracking the prestigious exams in her first attempt last year. “I just got to know. I still can’t get my head around this news. But it’s a great feeling,” she said. The new IAS topper said that the All India number one ranking and the news has come as a ‘pleasant surprise.’

A poster bearing Byju’s logo has surfaced on social media where by the edu-tech company is seen staking its claim on the success of Shruti. BYJU’S is a global ed-tech company, providing highly adaptive, engaging, and effective learning solutions to more than 150 million students around the world. With the BYJU’S way of learning, students become active and lifelong learners.

The poster has Shruti’s photo as the message reads, “Byju’s tablet and classroom programme student Shruti Sharma All India Rank 1 UPSC Civil Services exam 2021.”

Shruti, who also studied at Delhi University’s St Stephen’s College, thanked her family members and others, who supported her in her journey to become an IAS officer.

“Credit goes to everyone who was involved in my journey especially my parents. They were extremely supportive and friends who guided me,” she said.

The new IAS topper has not mentioned anywhere that she benefited from Byju’s Classroom and Tablet programme as claimed in the ed-tech company’s viral post.

According to Byju’s policies, if a student downloads 10 different educational applications on their mobile even to download study material, all the 10 applications will claim him/her as their student. Whether Shruti indeed downloaded study materials from Byju’s website is not clear. A lot will depend on what Shruti has to say on the viral claim.
