The Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday arrested a BJP office-bearer for making derogatory comments about Prophet Muhammad, days after Kanpur witnessed communal clashes. The arrested BJP functionary has been identified as Harshit Srivastava, who’s a district leader of the BJP’s youth wing in Kanpur.
Harshit Srivastava has been booked under sections 153A, 295A and 507 of IPC and section 67 of the IT Act.
Srivastava too had posted an objectionable tweet, which has now been deleted.
Nupur Sharma’s comments on a Times Now show presented by Navika Kumar had triggered a global controversy with more than a dozen Muslim countries registering their official protests. The Indian government was forced to issue a clarification, reiterating its resolve to respect every religion in the country.
This comes just hours after the BJP expelled one of its spokespersons, Naveen Kumar Jindal, from the party for posting an insulting tweet for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and suspended Nupur Sharma from the primary membership of the party for six years.
As many as 15 Islamic nations had registered their official protest over the objectionable remarks made by the BJP functionaries about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
