Trouble for Kangana Ranaut after Mumbai court threatens to issue arrest warrant in Javed Akhtar’s defamation case

Pro-BJP actor Kangana Ranaut may soon find herself in a spot of bother as a Mumbai court threatened to issue an arrest warrant if she did not appear in a defamation case filed by noted writer Javed Akhtar.

This was after Kangana once again avoided a personal appearance for the hearing. The court, according to Livelaw, said that it will issue an arrest warrant if she doesn’t appear on the next date.

Kangana’s lawyer told the magistrate court that the actor was unwell and showing covid symptoms. The court granted her exemption but warned of consequences if she did not appear on the next date.

Javed Akhtar’s lawyer Jay Bharadwaj had accused Kangana of obstructing the trial saying that these were orchestrated tactics to delay proceedings.

Last week, the Bombay High Court had rejected Kangana’s petition, which sought the quashing of the defamation case filed against her. Justice Revati Mohite Dere had said that the magistrate court had applied its mind and considered all aspects before issuing the summon to Kangana.

Akhtar had filed a defamation case against Kangana after he took a dim view of remarks made by the pro-BJP actor in an interview to Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami.

Speaking to Goswami, Kangana had said that Bollywood was run by the mafia. When asked to name those behind running this imaginary mafia, Kangana had named filmmakers Mahesh Bhatt and lyricist Javed Akhtar. “Then there are Javed Akhtar and company, who are so-called atheists. But their whole group is about keeping an eye on who is Islam friendly and who is not Islam friendly.”
