Shah Rukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday pulled off a stunning win against Delhi Capitals to book a place in the final of this year’s IPL.
Batting first, Delhi Capitals, Delhi Capitals made 135-5 in 20 overs. Shikhar Dhawan made 36, while Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten at 30.
When Kolkata Knight Riders began their run-chase, they looked set to achieve the target without much trouble they experienced their own batting collapse. Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer added 96 runs for the opening wicket in 12.2 overs before the latter departed after scoring an impressive fifty. He made 55 in 41 balls.
Nitish Rana was the next to go after scoring 13 runs followed by Gill, who made 46 in as many balls. With the KKR reduced to 125-3 in 16.4 overs, they needed just 11 runs in 20 balls. But they lost four wickets and could add only five runs in the next 18 deliveries.
It took Rahul Tripathi to hit a huge six to finish the match with two balls to spare.
Reacting to his side’s defeat, Rishabh Pant said, “Can’t change anything after the match. Always we kept on believing, and stayed in the game for as long as possible. The bowlers pulled it back. They bowled really well through the middle overs. We were stuck, and unable to rotate the strike. Hopefully we can come back net year for a stronger season. We played really good cricket throughout the season. We stuck together, and cared for each other. Hopefully we will improve next year and come back strongly.”
The KKR will lock horns with Chennai Super Kings for the IPL title on 15 October. Tonight’s victory by the KKR assumes significance given that the team from Kolkata have now won seven out of their last nine matches. They had defeated Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore in the ‘eliminator’ match earlier this week.
