Nupur Sharma absconding after Mumbai Police arrive in Delhi to arrest suspended BJP spokesperson, faces ridicule

Suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma is believed to have gone absconding after a special team of the Mumbai Police arrived in Delhi to arrest her in a case related to making objectionable remarks against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

A case was filed against Sharma in Maharashtra and the suspended BJP spokesperson was summoned to appear in the state to record her statement. But, she has reportedly become untraceable fearing arrest.

According to reports, the Mumbai Police are confident that they have enough ground to arrest her. The special of the Mumbai Police has been stationed in the national capital for the last five days. But, a report by NDTV said that she was untraceable.

A senior officer from the Maharashtra Police was earlier quoted as saying, “As part of the investigation into the FIR registered against Sharma, we have issued a notice under Section 41 (A) of the Criminal Procedure Code which is a notice of appearance before a police officer. We want to record her statement in connection with the investigation and get her side of the story.”

Sharma’s critics have taken potshots at the suspended BJP spokesperson on the report that she had absconded fearing arrest. Many mocked her ‘bravery’ in light of how her Hindutva supporters had declared her a ‘lioness.’






The BJP had suspended Sharma from the party after several Islamic countries registered official protests against her remarks for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on a Times Now show by Navika Kumar. She had later issued a public apology after alleging threats to her life.

Sharma’s ordeal may be far from over the Kolkata Police too have filed a similar case against her and she could face arrest by them in the future. This was after Trinamool Congress Minority Cell General Secretary Abul Sohail filed a case against her. The Kolkata Police have summoned to appear before them on 20 June.
