In another setback for Arnab Goswami, Kannur Judicial First Class Magistrate in Kerala has summoned the Republic TV founder directing him to appear in person on 20 June in a case related to allegedly insulting people of Kerala.

A report by Kerala’s Mathrubhumi website said that a CPI-M leader had filed a case against Goswami for calling people of Kerala shameless. CPI-M leader P Sasi had approached the court after serving a legal notice to Goswami in September last year.

Goswami was accused of insulting Kerala’s flood victims shameless after the state government accepted the reported offer of help from the UAE government. In the viral video, which was a part of his show, Goswami was seen saying, “This group is shameless, is the most shameless bunch of Indians I have ever seen. They’ve gone around spreading the lie religiously. I don’t know what they get for it. Whether they get paid for. Do they get paid money for abusing their own country..point is there is a conspiracy to malign India.”

In his letter to Goswami, Sasi had asked him to either apologise to the people or pay the Rs 10 crore in compensation.

No sooner had he the clip surfaced on Twitter, users had begun to target Goswami and the Malayali co-founder of Republic TV, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, with the hashtag   #ShamelessMalayali. Goswami’s critics had urged anyone who had association with his channel shameless in response to the former’s ‘shameless’ jibe.

The viral video was taken from Goswami’s debate show, which was broadcast after the UAE ambassador reportedly contradicted Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s claims that the gulf kingdom will help flood victims with Rs 700 crore financial assistance. Even though the claim was first made by Vijayan after his telephonic conversation with the Dubai crown prince, Goswami concluded that the ‘lie’ was spread by “shameless’ people to malign India.

Last month, a magistrate in Jammu and Kashmir had issued non- bailable arrest warrant against Republic TV founder Arnab Goswami with three of his colleagues. The Chief Judicial Magistrate in Srinagar had also asked the concerned Senior Superintendent of Police to ensure  they appear in the court in person on 23 March next month.
