Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra has asked the state police to examine the Netflix web series A Suitable Boy for objectionable scenes shot inside a Hindu temple. Mishra said that the scene capturing a Muslim boy kissing a Hindu girl inside a Hindu temple had hurt the sentiments of a particular community.

Mishra tweeted, “An OTT media platform has released a film titled A Suitable Boy. This has shown very objectionable scenes that hurt the sentiments of a particular religion. I’ve directed the police officials to examine its controversial content.”

This came after a BJP functionary followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted a clip from the web series that showed a Muslim character kissing his Hindu lover inside a temple. Gaurav Tiwari tweeted, “Netflix India shot three kissing scenes inside a temple premise in its programme The Suitable Boy. According to the plot, the Hindu woman loves Muslim youth. But why were all kissing scenes shot inside temple premises? I’ve filed an FIR in Riwa on this matter.”

The latest controversy comes in the immediate aftermath of the Madhya Pradesh government’s plans to enact a law against inter-faith marriages involving Hindu women and Muslim men by making it a punishable crime.

Directed by Mira Nair, A Suitable Boy stars Ishaan Khattar, Tabu, Rasika Dugal among others in lead roles.
