“Jaise chamaar nahi hote hain”: Wasim Akram’s post-match analysis on Pakistan’s defeat evokes angry reactions from Indian fans

Former Pakistani skipper Wasim Akram is facing widespread criticism for allegedly insulting India’s Dalit community during his post-match analysis on Pakistan’s humiliating loss to Afghanistan in a World Cup match. Pakistan lost to cricketing minnows by eight wickets.

Poor fielding, ineffective bowling and dismal showing with the bat were some of the reasons for Pakistan’s defeat. Despite having one of the best batters in the world in captain Babar Azam, Pakistan could post 282-7 in 50 overs. Afghanistan, a side which had previously won only two matches in a World Cup, achieved the target by losing just two wickets.

Reacting to Pakistan’s defeat, a visibly seething Akram slammed the players by calling them unprofessional and unfit.

Speaking on a Pakistani TV channel, he said, “..they were looking like chamaar (Indian Dalit caste).”

Akram also showered praises on the Indian side likening them to a train whose brakes had failed and it was on its way to run oever anyone who came its way.

But, many right-wing Indian Twitter users took offence to Akram’s comparison of Pakistani players with players from his country.

One wrote, “Wasim Akram disrespects lower-caste individuals by using casteism word “cham*ar” as a slang.” Another commented, “The last time I tweeted that Pakistanis calling Hardik ‘maila’ was casteist and colorism, I was attacked saying nothing like that exists in Pakistan. Well, there is great Wasim Akram saying a slur. Media training is the least that all subcontinent ex-players need.”
