British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has finally decided to resign as the leader of the Conservative Party leader later today. According to the BBC, a spokesperson for 10 Downing Street said that Johnson will make a statement to the country today.
His resignation comes amidst dozens of his cabinet stepping down from his posts by claiming to have lost confidence in his leadership. As many as 59 cabinet colleagues of Johnson have resigned so far.

It’s not clear if he will also resign as the prime minister. His resignation as the Conservative Party leader means that a new leadership race will take place this summer, paving the way for the election of a new prime minister.

Reacting to the news of Johnson’s planned resignation, Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood said that he was ‘glad he recognised the damage that was being done not just to the party brand but also our international stock.’ Speaking to Sky News, Ellwood said that the party now had a ‘massive amount of regrouping to do.’
