Arnab Goswami arrested; Republic TV taken in custody in dramatic fashion; days after lashing out at Salman Khan with ‘Bigg Boss of drugs’ jibe

Police in Maharashtra have arrested Arnab Goswami. The Republic TV founder was arrested in a dramatic fashion on Wednesday morning. The development came days after Goswami lashed out at Salman Khan by calling him a ‘senior citizen’ and ‘Bigg Boss of drugs.’

An anchor on Republic TV said that Goswami was arrested in a case related to abetment to suicide. Republic TV has called Goswami’s arrest an attack on press freedom. A tweet by Republic TV said, “Arnab Goswami pulled by the hair, assaulted and arrested in a case that was closed; taken in a police van; Republic enroute Raigad Police station.”

In a video posted by Goswami’s TV channel, the controversial anchor was heard saying, “They’ve beaten me. They’ve assaulted me. They did not let me meet my family…They beat up my son. Mere bete ko maara.

Goswami said that he was also not allowed to meet his in-laws before his arrest. Republic TV said that its founder was being taken to Raigad.

The Maharashtra government had earlier ordered a CID probe against Goswami for his alleged role in the suicide of an interior designer, who ended his life after failing to secure his payment from Republic TV for designing its studios.

Goswami has been relentless in his attack against Bollywood actors, particularly Salman Khan, for his silence on the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. He had called him ‘senior citizen’ and ‘Bigg Boss of drugs’ prompting the popular Bollywood actor to take an indirect dig at the Republic TV founder.

This was after Akshata Naik, the widow of interior designer Anvay Naik, recorded a short video seeking justice for her husband’s death in 2018. She alleged that her husband and mother-in-law had to commit suicide due to the non-payment of dues from Arnab Goswami.

Goswami is also facing a probe in the TRP scam, which has seen the arrests of owners of at least two TV channels. The Mumbai Police have already interrogated many executives of Republic TV in connection with the case.
