In a dramatic development, Chandannagar Police Commissioner Humayun Kabir on Friday resigned from his post citing personal reasons. He was promoted to the rank of inspector-general of police (IGP) in December last year.
Kabir was in the news last week when he arrested three BJP workers for chanting Goli Maro Saalon Ko.. slogans at a rally. Among those arrested included one local leader Suresh Shaw. The provocative slogan, according to NDTV, was chanted during a roadshow by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and Hooghly MP Locket Chatterjee.
“Three persons have been arrested. A case has been initiated against them for raising some slogans,” Kabir was quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying.
The BJP had said that similar chants were raised during a Trinamool rally but no action was taken against the supporters of the ruling party.
Adhikari was a close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee before he left the Trinamool Congress to join the BJP in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah last year.
A report by news agency PTI said that Gaurav Sharma, who is currently the Kolkata Police’s Joint Commissioner (Establishment), has been named as the new commissioner of Chandannagar, a city in the Hooghly district. Sharma is set to take charge on 1 February.
Bengal is set to go for assembly polls in May this year with the BJP making desperate attempts to dislodge the government headed by Mamata Banerjee.
