Aaj Tak’s Anjana Om Kashyap posts cryptic tweet slamming ‘a journalist,’ Twitterati wonder if it’s colleague Rajdeep Sardesai

This Saturday saw Twitterati explode after Aaj Tak TV anchor Anjana Om Kashyap’s cryptic tweet critical of a ‘journalist’ went viral. In her tweet, Kashyap had lashed out at a journalist, who according to her, was in the habit of coaching others on how they should ask questions while being ‘on-air.’

Without naming anyone, Kashyap wrote, “There’s a journalist. He has opened a coaching centre for asking questions on-air. Once, when given an opportunity, could not go beyond asking about relationships between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law. Giving certificates to everyone is his job. Perhaps this is the frustration of being made to wait outside the door.”

Although she did not name anyone, Twitterati particularly those with right-wing leanings were quick to conclude that Kashyap was targeting her own colleague in the India Today group and a veteran journalist, Rajdeep Sardesai. The reason they arrived at this conclusion was that Kashyap’s viral tweet had come hours after Sardesai was seen expressing his frustration at journalists not insisting on asking questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his much-publicised press conference on Friday night (watch below). Kashyap was one of the two journalists, who had directed her question at Modi during the press conference. Modi, in turn, had passed her question to BJP President Amit Shah.

The same night in a TV debate with his colleague Raj Chingappa and Rahul Shrivastava. A visibly agitated Sardesai was heard saying, “Do you think journalists themselves need to put their hands up when the prime minister says this Amit Shah’s press conference. Should they have been little bit more aggressive and said ‘no, no Mr prime minister, you have not addressed any press conference in the last five years, why don’t you take a couple of questions?’ I am playing a devil’s advocate.”

In response, Chengappa replied that Kashyap had directed her question at Modi. But Sardesai did not appear convinced with his defence for Kashyap and said, “She asked the question, but should she have been ‘sir this question is for you’.”

The ‘mother-in-law, daughter-in-law’ reference was widely viewed as Kashyap’s jibe at Sardesai’s past interview with UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
