Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the modern day version of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. Speaking to reporters in Varanasi, Modi’s home constituency, Nirupam said that hundreds of temples had been demolished at the behest of Modi in the Holy city.
He said, “Narendra Modi, who was elected by local people here in Varanasi, is in fact the modern day avatar of Aurangzeb. Because on his orders, hundreds of temples were demolished in Varanasi in the name of building a corridor. Modi also introduced a fine of Rs 550 for devotee wishing to visit Lord Vishwanath temple. This shows that what Aurangzeb could not achieve, Modi has done it.
Nirupam said that local Hindu population had risen against Aurangzeb when the latter allegedly ordered the demolition of temples here and imposed taxes for Hindu population. Today, he said, Modi, the self-proclaimed saviour of Hindus, had imposed jaziya tax for Hindu population wanting to visit Lord Vishwanath temple.
He said that he condemned the modern day Aurangzeb.
The Congress has fielded Ajay Rai against Narendra Modi from Varanasi.
