Faced with unprecedented outrage, Uttar Pradesh Police has finally filed an FIR against BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and others for allegedly raping a 17 year old Unnao girl, whose father had died in the police custody earlier this week. Senger has been booked under various sections of IPC and POSCO Act.
The UP government decided to lodge FIR against the BJP MLA and refer the case to the CBI after the Special Investigation Team submitted its report on Wednesday evening. The SIT also submitted a video of the girl’s father, before his death, saying he was assaulted by the BJP MLA’s brother Atul in the presence of police.
The government also decided to recommend a CBI probe into the alleged murder of the girl’s father in judicial custody. This decision came just after the MLA made an appearance at the official residence of Lucknow police chief to announce that he neither had a role in the rape nor the death of father.
The government also announced suspension of two senior doctors – DK Dwivedi and Prashant Upadhyay – of Unnao district hospital. It also announced a disciplinary action against three other doctors namely Dr Manoj Kumar, Dr G P Sachan and Dr Gaurav Agrawal of the jail department for laxity in giving proper medical care and treatment to the victim’s father, who died on Tuesday.
As reported by Indian Express, Unnao district jail superintendent A K Singh had said the girl’s father was handed over to police after he was allegedly beaten by four supporters of the MLA and their unidentified associates.
A DSP rank officer has been suspended for not responding to the repeated complaints of the victim and her family.
The father of the woman, who alleged rape by a BJP MLA, had died in police custody in Uttar Pradesh, raising questions on the near-collapsed law and order in the state under Yogi Adityanath government. The deceased was arrested after he along with other family members attempted suicide outside the residence of UP Chief Minister on Sunday protesting police’s inaction.
The shocking incident of the rape victim’s father succumbing to injuries sustained by beating has evoked angry reactions with activists questioning the deteriorating law and order in Uttar Pradesh.
