Karnataka’s IPS officer D Roopa on Sunday posted a selfie with BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy and wrote that she felt inspired by the ‘versatile person.’

Photo tweeted by D Roopa

She had clicked a selfie with the controversial BJP leader at a conclave, organised by Times Now in Bengaluru on Saturday. Roopa wrote, “The versatile person without whose complaint, probably, the lady (who enjoyed perks and privileges in Bengaluru prison as exposed by me) wouldn’t have landed in prison in the first place. Sir, u inspire!”

No sooner had she posted the selfie and the glowing tribute of the leader, widely known to be a face of hardcore Hindutva, had Roopa begun to face condemnation on the microblogging site. Supreme Court lawyer Karuna Nandy said, “Deeply disappointing to see D. Roopa tweet admiration about a divisive political figure who’s not even in government.”

Another user Sabina Basha joined in the conversation and wrote, “She has shown her bigoted side since 2013. Racial towards NE people, was in favour of encounter killings of Muslim undertrials in MP, made up stories about special treatment to Sasikala in jail.” Another user Ahad Shafi wrote, “Making her retired life secure.” Journalist Anoo Bhuyan wrote, “I think you of all people who cares about this kind of stuff, are best placed to see through people and things. And what do you feel about his positions on minorities and social issues? Does his anti corruption position reconcile with that?”

While speaking at the very same event attended by D Roopa, Swamy had sensationally said that the right to vote should be snatched away from Muslims in India, if they denounced their Hindu ancestry.

Roopa found plenty of support from others, who came to her rescue. One user identified as Samba wrote, “@Swamy39 is a patriot who is a role model for millions of people like me..You won’t understand.” “The tweet of @D_Roopa_IPS is meant to disappoint the liberals. So the disappointment of yours is obvious,” wrote another user Reju Singh.

Roopa too defended her praise for Swamy with her subsequent tweet. It read, “When u see bias in a harmless genuine tweet wherein there was a minimal common factor(prison connection), that’s when u are pushing the tweeter to embrace one extreme against the other That’s why twitterati are extremely divided. I see good things even in enemies n emulate. (sic).”

Roopa, had fallen out of favour with the Karnataka’s Congress government after she exposed the VIP treatment given to V Sasikala inside a Bengaluru jail last year. In March, she shot to fame for ‘refusing’ to accept an award from an NGO, run by BJP MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar. However, the NGO had later issued a statement clarifying that  she was never offered the Namma Bengaluru Foundation Award.
