All schools in Jamshedpur have been closed after a recent communal tension between two communities in Jharkhand’s steel city Jamshedpur. Huge contingent of paramilitary forces and local police have also been deployed to control the situation.
Clashes between two communities took place in Jamshedpur on Monday. Curfew was imposed and police rounded up several miscreants. According to police, as many as 100 people have been named in the FIR.
The trigger point for these communal clashes was the rumour that a girl from a particular community was molested by the members of other community.
A senior Jharkhand police officer said, “The situation is under control. There have been incidents mostly due to rumour-mongering, which happens in situations like this.”
Jharkhand is currently being ruled by the BJP-led alliance and Jamshedpur is the home city of the state’s chief minister Raghubar Das.
Saryu Rai, a senior minister in Das’ cabinet was quoted by NDTV as saying,”It is alarming that such a minor incident led to such violence. Some drug addicts were involved in that incident but it became a communal clash. The administration and the police should have acted earlier. We are inquiring into the incident.”
The city also saw protests from by right-wing RSS-affiliated groups Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Tuesday.
The government has closed all schools across Jamshedpur on Wedesnday.
