Royal Challengers Bangalore on Tuesday defeated Delhi Capitals by one run in a thrilling encounter.

Batting first, the RCB made 171-5 in 20 overs with AB de Villiers scoring 75 in 42 balls. The South African, who remained unbeaten, smashed five sixes and three boundaries. Along the way, he also became the second overseas batsman and third-fastest player to score 5,000 runs in the IPL.

AB de Villiers achieved the feat in 161 innings, while David Warner had taken 135 innings for the same milestone. Virat Kohli took 157 matches to score 5,000 runs and is the second-fastest after Warner.

Delhi Capitals almost chased the total but they paid a heavy price for leaving it too late. Rishabh Pant remained Not Out at 58 while Shimron Hetmyer was unbeaten at 53, which he faced just 25 balls to score.

Delhi Capitals finished their innings at 170-4 in 20 overs.

Reacting to his side’s defeat, Rishabh Pant said after the match, “Feeling disappointed. I think they were 10-15 runs extra on this wicket but Hetty played a brilliant innings, because of him we got close. When we had 14 or 16 to go, we were planning that whoever has strike has to go for it. We counted the overs really well but in the end the spinners didn’t get the help we thought they would, that’s why I went with Stoinis for the last over. It’s good to take positives from all matches, as a young team we want to improve each and every day.”
