The Indian hockey team on Wednesday fought valiantly against Argentina in the women’s semi-final match but narrowly lost the match 1-2. This was after they took an early 1-0 lead against their rivals. The goal for India came in the second minute of the match after Gurjit Kaur made no mistake in converting the penalty corner.
However, Noel Barrionuevo scored the equaliser in the 18th minute when she successfully converted her team’s third penalty corner. She scored her second goal by successfully converting another penalty corner in the 36th minute, giving her side a 2-1 lead.
Much to the displeasure of Indian fans, Argentina maintained their lead until the end to book a place in the finals. Indian women would now face Great Britain to play for a bronze medal.
India on Monday had created history by defeating Australians 1-0 in the quarter-final. This is the first time that the Indian women’s hockey team have come this far in the Olympic games.
