Italy on Monday defeated England on penalties to lift the Euro 2020 at Wimbley. This was after the match remained tied at 1-1 even after the extra time.
England took the lead through Luke Shaw’s splendid goal in the second minute of the match. This was the quickest ever goal in a Euros final.
Leonardo Bonucci levelled the score in the 67th minute after English goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s save came back off the post.
The match went into a penalty shootout after it remained 1-1 at the end of the extra time. England missed three penalties even though Pickford saved two.
Of England’s 10 last major tournament games that went into extra time, eight were decided through penalties. Of them, England lost six and won only two. Both those matches were under Gareth Southgate, England’s current coach.
The first win was against Columbia in 2018, while the other victory had come against Switzerland a year later.
Reacting to England’s defeat, former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard told the BBC, “If there’s one man who can put his arm around them and support them it’s Southgate because he’s been there. It’s going to hurt. There is nothing you can say. They stepped up but football is so, so cruel.”
