Delhi govt toughens stand on criminal defamation

A Delhi government circular calls all government officials including the Chief Minister, his cabinet members and other officials to report the matters of criminal defamation.

The circular asks government officials to report such matters to Principal Secretary (Home), who will then refer this to Director, Prosecutions for advice.
This circular was issued on May 6, days after the Delhi CM himself had questioned the constitutional validity of sections 499 and 500 of Indian Penal Code which deals with criminal defamation.

On May 1, the Supreme Court had stayed proceedings against the Delhi CM in a defemation case filed by Kapil Sibal`s son, Amit Sibal.

On May 3, while speaking at Janta Ka Reporter Launch Conclave, the Delhi CM had accused a section of media of conspiring against Aam Aadmi Party.
