Karnataka BJP President BS Yeddyurappa will take oath as the state’s chief minister at 6 pm today. “I just met the Governor, I will take oath as Chief Minister today at 6 pm,” Yeddyurappa was quoted by news agency ANI.

His announcement came days after the Congress-JDS government fell following their inability to prove majority in the assembly.

On Thursday, Karnataka Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar disqualified three rebel Congress MLAs under the anti-defection law. These three MLAs were Ramesh Jarkiholi, Mahesh Kumathalli, and R Shankar.

Kumar also said that he will take a call on whether to disqualify 14 other MLAs ‘in the next couple of days.’

Interestingly, Yeddyurappa’s announcement to take oath as the new chief minister comes just hours after Kumar disqualified three rebel MLAs. Had Kumar disqualified the remaining 14 MLAs too under the anti-defection law, this would have had a huge bearing on the longevity of his new government.
