Woman caught trying to eat her own daughter, sent to mental asylum

A woman in West Bengal’s Malda district was found trying to eat her own daughter, and has now been transferred to a mental asylum.

The horrific incident happened in Gopalpur village in Malda district on Thursday, where Pramila Mondal, 42, was caught cutting off the skin from the scalp of her daughter and eating it by her brother-in-law, who went to her house hearing her four-year-old daughter’s screams. The child was rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital for excessive bleeding. She is currently recuperating in the ICU.

Soon ater the incident came to light, the woman was attacked by an angry village mob but was rescued by the police. Doctors have stated that Pramila was mentally unstable and needed treatment regarding psychological disorder.

“If needed, the Juvenile Justice Court and Child Welfare Committee may intervene in the matter. I have heard that the family is very poor, but that could not have led to such a behaviour. We are looking into the matter,” Block Development Officer Partha Dey said.

Villagers have also stated that Pramila had once tried to burn her daughter to death and was an alcoholic as well as drug addict. Her husband left a year ago in search for a job but never returned.
