Virat Kohli shares video of Anushka Sharma admonishing man for throwing garbage on road, gets accused of publicity stunt

Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli on Saturday shared a video of his actor wife Anushka Sharma admonishing a man for throwing garbage on the road.

In the short video clip, Anushka is seen admonishing a man, seated in another ‘luxury’ car, for throwing plastic on the road. She is seen chastising, “Why are you throwing garbage on the road?” When she doesn’t get a response from the shocked passengers of another car, the actor goes on to repeat herself while also lecturing him on his responsibility as a citizen. She says, “Why are you throwing garbage on the road? Yes, Why are you throwing plastic on the road? You can’t just throw plastics on the streets. Use a dustbin.”

While posting the video, Kohli wrote, “Saw these people throwing garbage on the road & pulled them up rightfully. Travelling in a luxury car and brains gone for a toss. These people will keep our country clean? Yeah right! If you see something wrong happening like this, do the same & spread awareness.”

His subsequent tweet read, “Lot of people who don’t have the courage to do something like this find it funny. Everything for people nowadays is meme content. Shame.”

Many social media users were quick to hail Anushka for her decision to raise awareness on improving citizens’ civic sense. One user wrote, “Courage is needed to break conformist social behaviours too. It doesn’t always mean fighting goons. If 4 of your friends are doing something that you clearly know is unacceptable, it still requires toughness to stand up & point it out. (sic)” Another wrote, “Well done Anushka.. bravo girl (sic)”

However, there were also those, who termed it a publicity stunt by Anushka. One user tweeted, “Why are you recording your wife’s heroics and publishing it in social media?.. is this the first time you saw someone threw a plastic cover from a car?? If your intention was to advice him, first be friendly instead of being bossy.. this kinda attention seeking is so cheap (sic)” Another user wrote, “Putting someone’s video like this just humiliating ! Did you take permission from them that you are putting their video . Being famous doesn’t mean that you can do everything.Lots of people do it without showing off ! Such a shame Virat.”

Recently the Maharashtra government had implemented a plastic ban to reduce wastage and protect the environment. Anushka’s video also emerges after a series of Bollywood actors threw their support in favour of plastic ban by sharing a video highlighting its adverse impact on our planet. Among those who shared the identical video were Alia Bhatt, Pareeniti Chopra and Shraddha Kapoor. While posting the photo, Alia wrote, “Plastic is ruining our planet. Refuse it.”

I was privileged to experience my first dive 5 years ago. Since that time, a limitless, beautiful and pristine world has opened up for me. Every 3 months, my heart starts twitching for another adventure. I pick the most beautiful waters of the world, fly there, wear my wet suit and just jump in! However I have seen and felt a change within these 5 years. I visited reefs I have loved before, to see the gorgeousness again, and realised how much had changed. Reefs have bleached and died, resident fish have migrated or disappeared, and what used to be colourful reefs teeming with life are now ghostowns. The speed at which the planet is changing is alarming. And a huge part of the reason is human use of plastic. I have done dives where I have seen Cola cans, plastic bottles and plastic bags lying where there should be beautiful sand. It breaks my heart to know that humans are doing this to their own homes. Voiceless marine animals are dying due to no fault of their own. I urge everyone to STOP THIS. Stop this torture. We can easily live a life without plastic. We are an intelligent race, capable of finding alternatives, and it will make no difference to us!! But this small change will make ALL THE DIFFERENCE to the poor marine animals. MAKE THE CHANGE. Ultimately, we are saving our own home. ???? @paditv @petaking @homster @scubanees
