Parts of West Bengal have been tense since Ram Navami celebrations when professions taken out, mostly by BJP workers, caused communal violence in Asansol and Raniganj. At least four people are reported to have been killed.
On Wednesday, cops found a body of a 16-year-old son of a local Imam, who was allegedly kidnapped and beaten to death by Hindutva goons. The Imam, however, has become a hero because of his passionate speech urging Muslims not to retaliate his son’s murder. He even threatened to leave Asansol if Muslims did not pay heed to his appeal. His speech, made soon after the burial of his son, Sibtullah Rashidi, made everyone cry.
Meanwhile, a video of an elderly Muslim couple being forced to chant Jai Shri Ram has gone viral on social media platforms. The couple in the video are seen desperately pleading that they are blind and could not walk properly, but their pleas have little impact on the Hindutva goons, who make fun of their disability. One Hindutva goon is heard saying disparagingly, “So what you can’t see. You don’t have to use your eyes to chant Jai Shri Ram. Use your mouth.”
The elderly Muslim man then says there was no difference between Hindus and Muslims adding that ‘Bhagwan and Allah were the same.’ But the Hindutva goons threaten to beat them up if they refused to chant Jai Shri Ram and Jai Maa Tara.
Janta Ka Reporter can’t verify the exact location and date of this incident, but, going by the fluency of the perpetrators and the victims in Bengali, there’s little doubt that the it took place in West Bengal.
