Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is presenting the Union Budget 2021-22 in Parliament today. This is the first budget after the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the Indian economy, pushing it into successive quarters of negative growth.
Sitharaman is all set to read her budget from a tablet in contrast with the past practice of using papers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The move is also being seen as a push to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India campaign.
The budget is also being presented amidst raging farmers’ protests at the national capital’s borders and mounting joblessness. The finance minister has said that this year’s budget would be ‘unlike anything seen so far.’
The Bombay Stock Exchange saw a surge of over 443 points and the NSE Nifty of 115 points in opening trade ahead of today’s budget.
