Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan on Wednesday said it was most unfortunate that a filmstar like Shah Rukh Khan had become the target of some BJP leaders.

In a statement issued here, the minister for urban development and minority affairs, vented his anger on Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, who he said were heaping insults on artists, actors, writers and scientists.

Referring to the statement of BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya that Shah Rukh Khan’s heart was with Pakistan, Azam Khan said they (BJP leaders) had not only questioned the patriotism of the Bollywood actor but also hurt the wife and children of the star.

“The manner in which the people of Prime Minister Narendra Modi have gone berserk and targeting everyone is going to do nothing but shred the secular and peaceful fabric of the country,” he said.

Azam Khan also slammed the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh and the Shiv Sena for humiliating artists and writers.

Shah Rukh, while talking to a TV channel, had said that he too felt there was a growing religious intolerance in India adding that being intolerant and not secular was the ‘worst crime’ one could do as patriot.

VHP’s Prachi had called him anti-national asking him to move to Pakistan, while Vijayvargiya had described the actor as a ‘traitor.’
