Tribal brother-sister duo killed in Jharkhand on suspicion of being witch

Police in Jharkhand say that a tribal brother-sister duo in Sirum Ambatoli village in Khunti district were brutally killed by locals on Saturday for allegedly practicing black magic.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Khunti), Ranveer Singh told PTI that Porta Munda and his sister Paru Kumari were killed by unidentified miscreants. Munda was in his forties while his sister Kumari was 30 years old.  Singh said that witchcraft could be one of the reasons behind the attack and murder.

Killing innocent people on suspicion of practicing witchcraft is not in north India, particularly in Bihar and Jharkhand.

On being informed about the incident, a police team rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies, he said, adding investigations were on.

In a similar incident on Saturday, a 35-year-old woman was killed by her neighbours in Baskonagar under the jurisdiction of Adityapur police station of adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan district.

The woman was later identified as Poonam Soy, police said.

The tribal woman had gone to fetch water from a nearby tubewell when one Vijay Haiburu attacked her with a lathi and Vijay s father Chand Haiburu slit her throat with a sword, police said.

The accused were arrested, the police said.
