A video of a distraught daughter recounting how her businessman father was gunned down by the Indian security forces in Jammu and Kashmir has gone viral on social media. In the video, the 13-year-old daughter of Mohammad Altaf Bhatt could be seen describing the moments when she learnt about her father’s killing by the Indian forces.

The daughter said that her uncle received a call about her father. “My father left for the shop. Usually, he returns by 6 PM. But, when he didn’t return by 7 PM, we got very worried. We made several phone calls but he did not answer.

“I even called my cousin, who works with him. Even he didn’t answer our calls…We then called my uncle, who said that an encounter was underway there. I started crying a lot. I don’t know why, but I cried a lot.”

The daughter said that her uncle received a call around 10 PM and everyone started crying. “I started praying for my father to Allah. My father was taken into custody thrice and released twice. He was killed the third time.”

The girl said that Indian security forces were laughing shamelessly when she questioned them for killing an innocent man. “My brother is so young. What would I tell him about our father,” she asked.

The police, according to NDTV, first said that Bhatt and another businessman were killed by terrorists. However, they later changed their version to claim that they were killed in the crossfire. The Indian forces have changed their version once again by claiming that Bhat and his nephew would be treated as ‘harbourer of terrorists’ since he owned the building.

The Indian forces have faced widespread condemnation for human rights violations in Muslim-majority Kashmir ever since the Narendra Modi government revoked the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir and brought the region under its direct control through the military in 2019.
