Swedish Defence Minister to visit India, vital defence deals expected under “Make In India” initiative

Swedish Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist will arrive in New Delhi tomorrow on a four-day visit. The Defence Minister is expected to offer Gripen NG fighter aircraft or offer a possible joint collaboration in the manufacturing of single engine light combat fighter jets.

Hultqvist is also expected to visit the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited units in Bengaluru. During his visit, Hultqvist will also hold talks with Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

Earlier, India’s Defence Minsiter Manohar Parrikar had sought Swedish defence manufacturing company Saab Group’s help in the making of the Mark II version of Tejas which would replace the aging MiG-21s .

The Saab Group is most likely to insist on a government-to-government (G2G) deal if they step in to assist India in developing and manufacturing a light combat fighter.

on June 1, India and Sweden had signed several agreements to boost ties and decided to restart the bilateral strategic dialogue and also to boost cooperation in defence sector under the ambitious ‘Make-in-India’ initiative.
