In a suspected militant attack, a pistol-borne youth shot at a cop in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district court on Thursday morning and then fled the spot, sending waves of panic in the area.

The incident allegedly occurred when constable Mohammad Yousuf was frisking people at the court entrance along with two of his other colleagues.

“A youth believed to be a suspected militant showed up at the gate and tried to snatch AK-47 from the cop. But the cop didn’t let the rifle go,” an eye-witness told Kashmir Life.

“As a scuffle of sorts ensued, other cops rushed towards the gate. Sensing the threat, the youth took out a pistol and shot the cop, Mohammad Yousuf and fled the spot.”

The injured cop is currently being treated in Srinagar’s SMHS hospital and his condition is said to be extremely critical.

A manhunt to nab the youth has meanwhile been launched by a police party.
