Suryakumar Yadav played a match-winning knock of 62 as India defeated New Zealand in the first T20 International of the home series.

Batting first, New Zealand made 164-6 in their quota of 20 overs. Martin Guptill was the top scorer for the Kiwis with an impressive knock of 70 that he took just 42 balls to score. Mark Chapman made 63 in 50 balls.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravichandran Ashwin shared two wickets each for India, while Mohammaed Siraj and Deepak Chahar took one wicket each.

India began their run chase on an aggressive note with newly-appointed skipper Rohit Sharma showing his intent right from the first ball. Sharma made 48 in 32 balls and was unlucky to not have completed his fifty. Yadav continued to hit Kiwi bowlers all around the stadium. By the time he was out, India had reached well within the target.

Team India won the match with two balls to spare.
