The Supreme Court on Friday gave dressing down to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ashwini Upadhyay asking if the BJP was financing him to file multiple PILs.

The bench headed by Chief Justice of India TS Thakur asked Upadhyay to go to the government and seek relief as the BJP is ruling at the Centre.

According to an ANI report, an angry bench said, “You came up with petitions after petition, who was financing you? Is the government financing you? Why did not you go to the government with your prayer for relief?”

Times of India quoted the bench as saying, “Is BJP is financing you to do political activism in court. Is this the job that BJP has given you? Is BJP financing you to carry campaign for party in courts.”

The report further added, “You have become a professional PIL activist and we see you everyday filing PIL. It’s your party which is in power at Centre so why don’t you approach the government for your grievances.”

Upadhyay, also a BJP spokesperson, had earlier approached the apex court seeking a liquor policy, on the amount of liquor that can be consumed by a person.

Dismissing his PIL, the court said, “We don’t want to encourage practice of political activist trying to use the judicial forum for political gain.”
