Former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has congratulated Himanta Biswa Sarma for being elected the leader of the Assam BJP. His congratulatory note came hours after the central leadership of the BJP decided to name Sarma the new chief minister of Assam.

Sonowal wrote, “Congratulations to Shri @himantabiswa on being elected the leader of @BJP4Assam Legislative Party. I believe that you will carry forward the development journey of Assam that we together began as #TeamAssam under the leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi ji.”

Sonowal elected the chief minister of Assam in 2016 after the BJP won a majority for the first time in the state. However, Sarma, who had quit Congress to join the BJP just before 2016, successfully managed to raise his clout within the Hindutva party in the last five years and made himself a prime candidate to become the new chief minister.

The results for the Assam elections were declared on 2 May but the BJP failed to announce the name of its new chief minister. Both Sonowal and Sarma were summoned to Delhi by the central leadership of the BJP over the weekend.

Sarma would take the oath of office on Monday, while Sonowal is likely to be accommodated in the cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was a union minister before being appointed as the chief minister of Assam five years ago.
