The right-wing brigade in India has reacted angrily to former Union Minister P Chidambaram’s call for a revolt against the Centre’s Narendra Modi government. Hindutva foot soldiers on Twitter trended hashtag #ArrestPChidambaram by terming his tweet ‘anti-national.’
Reacting to the poor handling of the latest wave of the pandemic by the Modi government, Chidambaram had tweeted, “People must revolt against a government that is assuming all the people of India are fools.”
This was after Health Minister Harsh Vardhan had denied reports of oxygen shortages in India. Chidambaram had asked, “Are all the television channels telecasting fake visuals? Are all the newspaper stories incorrect? Are all the doctors lying? Are all the family members making false statements? Are all the visuals and photographs fake?”
Chidambaram had added, “I am appalled by the statement of the Union Health Minister that there is no shortage of oxygen or vaccines or Remedesivir. I am also appalled by the statement of the U.P. Chief Minister that there is no shortage of vaccines in U.P.”

Angered by Chidambaram’s call for a revolt against the Modi government, BJP supporters took to Twitter to demand his arrest.
Tens of thousands of people have died in the last few weeks since the latest wave of the pandemic struck India. Many believe that the pandemic spiralled out of control largely because of the inept handling of the Modi government. Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah had faced flak for their decision to address big election rallies even when scores died due to oxygen shortages.
