More than a week after the shameful Dadri incident, senior BJP leaders appear from being remorseful on the death of an innocent man over rumours that he ate and stored beef in his house.
BJP MP Shakshi Maharaj has said that insults to ‘gau mata (mother cow)’ will not be tolerated.
“If someone insults our mother, we would rather die than tolerate it… for us, it is Bharat mata, our biological mother and gau mata,” the BJP was quoted by news agency ANI.
He said people will be ready to kill or get killed if a terrorist attacks “Bharat mata”. “It is the same with one’s biological mother and gau mata,” he added.
Sakshi Maharaj is a BJP MP from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh and has been known for making communally charged statements in the past.
The lynching of an innocent man in Dadri has evoked sharp reaction from around the world. The role of BJP has come under huge scrutiny as all those arrested bar one belonged to a local BJP leader’s family.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has so far chosen not to speak on this issue prompting many commentators to conclude that hatemongers such as those in Dadri enjoyed his tacit approval.
