Rapist baba was on list of VVIP dignitaries entitled for airport lounge facilities

Amidst huge uproar over the rapist baba Gurmeet Singh being granted VVIP access to airport lounges, an embarrassed Narendra Modi government on Saturday said that his privileges will soon be removed.

The topic became a subject of intense conversation after noted lawyer Prashant Bhushan posted a tweet with an image of what appeared to be a list of those dignitaries entitled for access to VVIP lounges at Indian airports.

The rapist baba was last week sentenced to 20 years in prison- 10 years each for two rape cases

“It has now been decided to withdraw the permission for use of reserve lounge at airports granted to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, Chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, Sirsa, with immediate effect,” PTI quoted a letter dated 1 September from the Civil Aviation ministry to the chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI)

Permission to access “reserve lounges” at airports comes under the purview of the the ministry. However, it could not be immediately ascertained when Gurmeet Singh was given this perk.

The ministry of aviation, in its letter accessed by Janta Ka Reporter shows the privilege was accorded in 2015 during the current government’s term.

The letter says, “I am directed to refer to this Ministry’s letter of even number dated 07.04.2015 on the subject mentioned above and during the course of reviewing the permission granted for use Reserved Lounge at airports, it was observed this permission is in existence in favour of Shri Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, Chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, Sirsa.”

A senior official of AAI said instructions have been passed on to regional executive directors as well as airport directors to comply with the order.

Doubts were raised on social media platforms over the authenticity of the list. However, the fact-checking website, SMHoaxSlayer said that it found the list to be credible.
