Congress MP Rahul Gandhi addressed a new conference hours after the government cut off water and electricity supply at the farmers’ protest site at the Ghazipur border with Uttar Pradesh. This had led to farmer leader Rakesh Tikait breaking down in public. Reacting to the development, Gandhi had tweeted, “PM is wreaking the country by attacking farmers and labourers. Only anti-national forces will benefit.”

LIVE UPDATES on Gandhi’s press conference will appear below:

  • This is robbery. This robbery must stop. We will support farmers to stop this robbery in whatever way we can.
  • The country will not benefit from instability. This instability will not go unless injustice meted out to farmers is corrected… The whole idea is to discredit the movement. The PM has to listen to them otherwise this will spread fast.
  • The prime minister works for five businessmen. He announces demonetisation for them, rolled out GST for them and now Farm Laws. I want farmers to not move an inch on this issue.
  • Ask Home Minister who allowed these people to reach the Red Fort.
  • It’s absolutely wrong the way the government is assaulting farmers at the Singhu border.
  • The first Farm Law will destroy the Mandi system…Instead of resolving the situation, the government is thrashing farmers and invoking NIA against them. The government should immediately repeal these laws.
  • Rahul Gandhi started his news conference by asking reporters why they are quiet and tense. Congress leaders tell reporters, “You are sitting as if you you are sitting in the BJP office. You should be relaxed when you are sitting in the Congress office”
