Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday slammed the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat for his comments that the Sangh was capable of preparing an army within three days.

Speaking in Muzaffarpur, Bhagwat had said, “Sangh will prepare military personnel within three days which the Army would do in 6-7 months. This is our capability. Swayamsewak will be ready to take on the front if the country faces such a situation and Constitution permits to do so).”

Reacting sharply to Bhagwat’s comments, Gandhi said that the RSS chief had insulted ‘every Indian’ and all ‘those who have died for our nation.’

“The RSS Chief’s speech is an insult to every Indian, because it disrespects those who have died for our nation. It is an insult to our flag because it insults every soldier who ever saluted it. Shame on you Mr Bhagwat, for disrespecting our martyrs and our Army,” Gandhi tweeted.

Bhagwat had said that the RSS was neither a military nor a para military organisation adding that it was like a “parivarik sangathan” (family organisation) where ‘discipline is practised like the army.’

His comments had evoked angry reactions from ex-servicemen, members of civil society and journalists on social media with an overwhelming majority of them slamming Bhagwat for insulting the Indian army.

Faced with the condemnation, the RSS issued a clarification saying that Bhagwat’s statements were being misinterpreted. The statement said that what Bhagwat meant was that if ‘situation arises and the constitution permits’ the army would need six months to prepare the society while Swayamsevaks can be trained in three days.
