Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi today reached Fatehgarh Sahib district in Punjab and met the family members of Surjit Singh. Singh was a farmer from Dadu Majra village who committed suicide by consuming a poison.
Singh had met Rahul Gandhi in April, when the Congress VP was on a tour of Punjab and had visited the Sirhind mandi (market).
During their interaction, the deceased farmer had asked Rahul to raise the farmers’ issue in the Parliament.
Rahul Gandhi’s official Twitter handle posted some pictures as well.
According to reports, Singh owned six acres of land, and had taken another 19 acres on lease. But due to poor crop yield for two successive seasons, he was unable to pay back the lease amount and committed suicide.
Meanwhile, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Partap Singh Bajwa has reportedly announced the compensation of Rs. two lakh for Singh’s family.
