Polluting Ganga to be criminal offence

The Union Water Resources Ministry along with the ministries of environment, urban development and law and justice, is in the advanced stages of preparing a law which incorporates criminal provisions, in order to abate pollution and maintain sustainable cleanliness, reports say.

Allahabad, Kanpur, Mathura, Nabadweep, Sahibganj, Varanasi and Vrindavan are among the eight places on the river banks, where a pilot project is being launched this June, say sources. This would include paid boatmen clearing trash on the river surface and transporting it to dumping yards. The implementation would be through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The Centre, in March had said that it would enact a law to protect the river from pollution permanently. They have also come up with plans to prevent untreated sewage, effluents and trash from cremation from entering the river.
