New appointed minister in Narendra Modi government, Ramdas Athawale wanted to appoint former diplomat, Devyani Khobragade, as his personal secretary. But, the Prime Minister’s Office turned down the minister’s wish.

Athawale is the leader of Republican Party of India (A) and has been been given charge of social justice ministry.

Athawale, according to media reports, was keen to appoint Khobragade, who’s the daughter of the minister’s friend and party colleague, Uttam Khobragade.

The reports said that soon after becoming the minister, Athawale forwarded his request asking Devyani to be appointed his PS to the external affairs ministry. The MEA then transferred the request to the PMO, which wasted no time in rejecting the request asking Athawale to send suggestion for names other than Devyani because of her controversial past.

Devyani was a former deputy consul general in the Us, where she was arrested in alleged visa fraud case.

Athawale has now got Prashant Rokde, an IRS officer, as his PS.
