Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan has announced a reduction of Rs 3 per litre in the petrol price. Thiagarajan made the announcement in the state budget.
Thiagarajan said that the decision to slash petrol price would lead to a loss of Rs 1,160 crore for the government, the decision was taken on the directive from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin.
This was the first time a finance minister presented a paperless budget in the state assembly. The budget session, which started today, will come to an end on 21 September.
According to the Indian Express, Thiagarajan also allocated Rs 6607.17 crore for irrigation in his budget.
He announced that the Tamil Nadu government would set up sports arenas in every legislative assembly constituency at the cost of Rs 3 crore each.
Tamil Nadu now has a coalition government of the DMK and the Congress. The BJP and its ally AIADMK had to face a humiliating defeat in the last assembly polls in Tamil Nadu.
