Police in Karachi say that a news anchor working for a Pakistani TV channel was shot dead on Tuesday night along with his friend over a personal dispute. Mureed Abbas sustained multiple bullet wounds on the chest and abdomen. Abbas worked for Bol News TV channel and the incident took place in the Defence Area of Karachi.
Quoting police sources, Pakistani news website Dawn reported that one of Mureed’s friends too received two bullets and later succumbed to his injuries after being brought to a hospital. As for Abbas, doctors said that he was brought dead to the hospital. Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre Executive Director Seemin Jamali confirmed that Abbas had been brought dead to the hospital.
Abbas, according to media reports in Pakistan, had monetary disputes with his killer, whose identity has been withheld. DIG Sharjeel Kharal said that a police party raided the residence of the suspected killer and caught him attempting suicide. “The suspect shot himself in the chest,” he was quoted as saying.
Abbas’ killer is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Geo News of Pakistan identified Abbas’ killer as one Atif Zaman. The deceased’s wife, who is also a tv anchor, said that her husband invested Rs 5 million in Zaman’s tyre business and was lately asking him to return his money.
Taking cognisance of the incident, Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kaleem Imam has directed the concerned Deputy Inspector General (DIG) to submit a report in the matter.
