One dead, several missing after boat capsizes in Assam following collision


At least one person has died and many were reported missing after a boat capsized in Assam following a collision with a ferry in Jorhat, Assam. The state chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said that 42 people had been evacuated, while at least four people were still missing.


“Two boats collided, one of them capsized. As of now, it’s difficult to ascertain number of people on it. However, 42 people rescued so far. One woman died. So far, 4 people have been reported missing but the entire report will come in 2-3 hours,” Sarma was quoted by news agency ANI.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Saddened by the boat accident in Assam. All possible efforts are being made to rescue the passengers. I pray for everyone’s safety and well-being.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, “The news of the capsizing of ferry boat in Assam is tragic. As we await further details, I extend condolences to the family of the victims. Let’s hope the rescue operation manages to save lives in the next few hours. I appeal to local Congress teams to help in every way possible.”

A report by Indian Express said that the collision occurred when the boat, identified as Ma Kamala hit the government-owned ferry Tripkai. In the video, panic-stricken passengers including women could be seen jumping into the river in a desperate bid to save themselves.
